- Bronze mirror case, ancient art
The design on this bronze mirror case shows princess Europa sitting on the back of a bull, with the sea below and a tree behind.
In Greek mythology, Europa from Tyre (now in Lebanon) was abducted by the god Zeus, in the form of a bull, and carried across the Mediterranean Sea to the island of Crete. As shown here, Zeus eventually set her down under a tree at Gortyn, in the south of the island. There is still a plane tree among the ruins of the Roman city of Gortyn said to mark the spot.
Minos, one of Europa’s children with Zeus, went on to rule Crete.
The case is decorated in ‘repoussé’, which means the design has been beaten through from the other side.
Gilded bronze mirror depicting Europa and the bull, 1-200 CE, copper alloy, 13.7cm (diameter).
